Company founder, Freemon Borkholder was trained in the traditional Amish art of woodworking in the town of Nappanee, Indiana using the same techniques passed down by generations of Borkholders since the family settled in the early 1840′s. After leaving the farm and perfecting his craft to become a renowned builder, Freemon founded Borkholder Furniture in 1981.
While keeping the style and spirit of traditional handcrafted Amish furniture alive, Borkholder Furniture builds each piece by hand with master Amish craftsmen. The maker initializes and dates each piece for authenticity so you know that this furniture was not made by a machine, but by a living and breathing artist. Constructed of solid wood, Borkholder harvests premium American forest stock with the upmost respect for the earth′s natural resources. Carefully planned and controlled harvesting of lumber ensures that the forests from which they come experience the most minimum of changes.
Borkholder uses the following wood for a beautiful selection:
Wild Cherry
Hard Maple
Quartersawn White Oak
Borkholder employs Amish building techniques that have stood the test of time, making this handcrafted Amish furniture unique to the market:
Tongue and groove glue joints
Drawers constructed of 3/4″ material of the same wood type as the rest of the piece
Dovetailed front and back
Backs are ship lap and made using full 3/4″ boards of the same wood as the rest of the piece
Each piece of handcrafted Amish furniture is handrubbed with oil stains and finishes to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. The result of all this hard work is the very best that handcrafted Amish furniture has to offer and a piece of furniture you can proudly display for generations.
