The winter Tupelo Furniture Market in Tupelo, Mississippi wrapped up a week ago today, and had many furniture retailers shopping early for market closeouts, discounts and specials.

“Our traffic was stronger than last market,” said Christopher DeLaGuardia, vice president of sales for  Coaster Furniture, maker of everything from home office furniture to bedroom furniture. “We saw buyers early, which was nice,” he added, saying the company saw many Top 100 stores. “We noticed this show that we had buyers from both coasts.”

Although attendance for this year’s show was down somewhat, those who did attend seemed ready to place orders.

February 9, 2009 marks the beginning of this year’s Las Vegas Market, where more than 100 first time exhibitors will be showcasing their products.

New market exhibitors include suppliers and manufactures in all product categories including furniture, accessory, lighting, gift, textile, and more.

To help out the furniture industry, many industry trade associations are petitioning Congress and Barack Obama’s new administration for tax incentives to offset furniture purchases.

The proposal is a two or three year refundable tax credit for purchases or installation of new home furnishings.

The plan would be as follows:

• For those making $50,000 or less, a tax credit of 10% -20% on home furniture purchases.
• For individuals who make less than $150,000, or couples with incomes under $250,000, a 10% tax deduction, capped at $2,000

Other incentives for commercial retailers and contractors are also included in the plan.
