Ergonomics and You

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
Apollo Computer Tower by Studio RTA

Apollo Computer Tower by Studio RTA

With the end of the break and the start of a new semester, some of you are groaning at the prospect of going back to school.

Not because of the workload!  Heck, you love reading assignments, you love writing papers; you love the hours of research, either in the library or online.

No, you’re groaning because it’s all so uncomfortable.  You ache.  Your back.  Your wrists.  Your head.  After three hours cramming Industrial Age Britain into your brain cells, you’re mainlining ibuprofen or acetaminophen and you can no longer move your fingers to text your buddy.

My friend, have you looked into ergonomics?

“No, dude,” you answer.  “I’m taking a 20 hour load as it is.”

Ergonomics is a science, but it’ll benefit you more than another class would at this point.  Ergonomics is the study of design in adapting places and tools to people.  It’s not just a word some smart-aleck marketer made up to sell weird-looking mousepads.

In fact, ergonomic furniture is designed to help prevent all those aches and pains you may have been feeling from pulling those long hours at the keyboard.  Instead of the rec room folding chair, you might consider getting an office chair with more padding, or one with adjustable height.  You might even take a look at a knee chair, which has no back at all–a knee chair provides proper alignment for the spine and reduces strain on your lower back.

To help reduce the risk of carpel tunnel syndrome, arrange your workstation so that your elbows are slightly below your wrists when you type.  It’s easy now to find computer desks designed with an eye toward ergonomic concerns.  The inclusion of a lower-level slide-out keyboard can make a huge difference in how you feel after writing a term paper.

When you feel better, you perform better, and when you perform better–well, you might ace that test on Industrial Age Britain after all.
