Setting the Scene with Bedroom Sets

Bedrooms are our sanctuaries from the stresses of life. Creating the ideal setting begins by asking yourself some basic questions:

Who will occupy the room?
How much space is available?
What style of furniture goes with the décor?
What furnishings can I add to make it complete?

So let’s figure out what you should consider before you start shopping for bedroom furniture.

Whose bedroom is it?

For adults:

Do I prefer a traditional or contemporary, country or cottage bedroom look?
Is there a particular style of bed I like? (Platform, sleigh, canopy, poster)
Do I have enough space for the set of bed, dresser and mirror that I choose? (Be sure to measure the area of your bedroom to know that each piece of furniture will fit.)

The choices in bedroom furniture can be daunting. Will the bedroom set you choose complement the room or overwhelm it?

For teens:

They use their bedrooms to kick back and keep in touch with friends. Questions for you to consider:

Are there styles of beds that especially appeal to your teen? (Platform beds, canopy beds and loft beds, for example)
Do the dresser and mirror suit your teen’s taste?
Are there bedroom accessories your teen might want? (Cool lamps, decorative mirrors)
What about desks for computers and TVs, and shelves to hold the all-important collectibles?

Get your teen’s input.

For kids:

They like to turn their bedrooms into playrooms. Their rooms need to be able to withstand the rigors of rough-housing while providing a fun, secure and comfortable environment. Ask yourself:

Do you want furniture that expresses a certain age and interest? (For example, beds with playground equipment, pirate- or military-theme beds, panel beds with pastel colors)
Is the room to be shared with another child? (A bunk bed or panel bed with a trundle unit could be a satisfactory solution)
Do you have a limited amount of space and need a maximum amount of storage? (Underbed storage drawers, bookcase headboards, double dressers and armoires can solve the problem)
Would you prefera bed that “grows” with your child? (Many convertible cribs can change from a baby’s bed to a daybed to a Full-size bed)
